5 分钟Hi there.
This is Harry, and welcome back to our podcasts.
And the podcast I have for you today relate to the word up.
Okay?
So I'm trying to give you some assistance in how to use some of these expressions.
So today we're using the prefix up.
It, of course, can also be used as a preposition, and we use it all the time to give up, to hold up, to look up.
But here we're using it as a prefix.
And a prefix goes in front of the word pre meaning before.
Okay, so I've got three in this particular podcast.
Uproot, upgrade, and update.
So, uproot, r o o t.
We often use this when we're talking about plants or trees.
To uproot a tree.
So, to uproot a tree means to take the tree out of the ground, the part of the tree above the ground, the tree trunk, branches, and all of that under the ground, which are the roots.
So to uproot it means to take up the roots and then replant it somewhere else.
So often in a garden, somebody's designing their garden, they may like a tree in a better location, or they might like a plant to be in a better location.
So they uproot it.
They dig around the tree, take everything very carefully and replant it or relocate it somewhere else in the garden.
But we can also have uprooting when there's a particularly savage, strong storm, very high winds, and these often uproot trees.
