  • Hi there.

  • Welcome back to the podcast where we try to help you with your understanding of the english language, some grammar content, sentences to be explained, expressions, phrasal verbs, whatever might be causing you some concern.

  • So, what do I have for you now?

  • Okay, well, let's get started.

  • We're going to take a look at the passive tense.

  • The passive tense, the two basic tenses, active and passive.

  • Just to remind you, when you look at the active, it's all about the subject, the verb, and the object.

  • Three, the subject, the verb, and the object.

  • Let me give you an example.

  • The man built the the house.

  • Man, subject, built, verb, house, object, the man built the house.

  • But if I turn that around and I want to put it into the passive, I make the object the most important part of the sentence.

  • So I take the house, which is the object from the first sentence, and it becomes the focal the house was built by the man.

  • The house was built by the man.

  • So here, the house, which was the object in the sentence, is the most important, and then we follow it with was built by the man.

  • Okay, and the two important parts, when you're putting together and using the passive, must use the verb to be in some format, the verb to be.

  • So in my sentence, the house was built by the man was past format of the verb to be, and then built is the verb.

  • And we use the third, the past participle of that verb, build, built, built.

  • Okay, so built, built.

  • The house was built by the man, so that in its simplest format is the passive.
