6 分钟Hi there, this is Harry, and welcome to our podcast where I am trying to help you to understand the english language and to help you to communicate better with people that you come across either in a personal capacity or in your business.
So what have I got for you this podcast?
Well, we're going to start with some fixed expressions.
These are sometimes called two word expressions because there's basically two words and they're fixed expressions because the order of the words never changes.
Okay, so I'll explain them as I go through them first.
Through and through.
Of course, as you've guessed, they're the same words, so whether you change them around, it isn't going to make any difference.
But through and through, this is when we are trying to describe something.
For example, he is italian through and through, meaning every part of him is italian.
The way he speaks, the way he acts, what he eats, what he does, his love for football, his love for nice clothes, his actions, his gestures.
He's an Italian through and through.
He's a businessman through and through.
So again, we're taking completely, 100%.
Everything about him is a businessman.
The type of meetings he has, the work he does, the way he approaches his life.
Ah, he's a businessman through and through.
The next one, rough and ready.
But when something is rough and ready, it's something that we might just throw together quite quickly.
So you've been out all day, you've either been working or shopping or you've been doing something else.
And when you come home you're really tired and kids are asking what's for dinner?
