  • Hi there, this is Harry, and welcome back to our podcast.

  • And I'm trying to help you to get a better understanding of english grammar, idioms, phrasal, verbs, all the ways in which you can improve your spoken English, that you can have good conversations and a better overall experience.

  • So what do I have for you in this podcast?

  • Well, this podcast is a follow on from the previous one.

  • And what we're looking at in particular are those idioms connected with giving advice or to give a warning.

  • Okay, so I'll give you a number of these idiomatic expressions and I'll explain to you which is advice and which is a warning.

  • Okay, so let's start with the first one.

  • A blessing in disguise.

  • A blessing in disguise.

  • Well, a blessing is something that usually a priest gives, you know, when he, at mass, he gives a blessing, or the pope gives his blessing in the basilica on a Sunday to the crowds, or a father will give his blessing, or he used to, to the daughter of his, sorry, the marriage of his daughter to some guy.

  • Okay, so these are all things about blessings.

  • So a blessing in disguise is something that we do that we might look on as negative or as a something, somebody turns us down, some request.

  • But when we look at it in the hard light of day, it actually might have been a blessing that somebody didn't allow us to do it.

  • So let me give you an example of a blessing in disguise.

  • So one of your children comes to you and says that they, they would like to pursue a career in acting.

  • Yeah.

  • And you absolutely put your foot down, say, oh, that's not a career for you, you know, what experience have you got?

  • You know, it's very precarious.

  • It's not a good way to make money unless you're really, really lucky or really, really talented.

  • And look, I really don't think so.
