  • Hi there, this is Harry, and welcome to my podcast where I try to help you to improve your understanding of the English language so that you can communicate in a better way, both in terms of your business English and your normal English that you might use in conversation.

  • Today we're going to focus on vocabulary.

  • We're going to look at the word strange and look at alternatives.

  • And as always, I'll give you some examples.

  • As always, I will give you the details as to how to contact me at the end of the podcast.

  • Okay, so let's get started.

  • We're going to look at the word strange.

  • So there are many ways in which we can use the word strange.

  • You know, we can say, oh, that's a strange thought, or he's a strange person, or just simply that strange.

  • Yeah.

  • Now, and every time I teach and every time I talk to students and every time I do some practice with them, particularly written work, I try to encourage them to find synonyms so that they don't repeat that same word over and over again, particularly when they are doing some exams, I think it's really important to identify different words and demonstrate to the examiner that you can use alternatives and that you have a broader and wider vocabulary.

  • So let's have a look.

  • Strange.

  • Well, here are a number of words.

  • I'll give them to you and then I'll try and explain them with the use of some examples.

  • Weird, bizarre, odd, quirky.

  • Q it's a quirk, quirky, eccentric, surreal, and it's got double r s u r r surreal.

  • And off the wall in here we've got a hyphenated off hyphen the, and then funny.

  • Okay, but funny.

  • Not in a ha ha ha way, but funny in a peculiar way.
