  • So what we're going to talk to you about today?

  • Well, we're going to look at some fixed phrases and connect it with the word down.

  • Okay, so fixed phrases with down, let me give them to you first of all, and then I'll give you the examples.

  • Down and out, down in the mouth, ups and downs, down the drain, down to earth, hand me downs, down payment, down at heel.

  • Okay, so I'm going to give you some examples of all of those.

  • They're fixed phrases, so they never change.

  • Yeah, it's always in that position.

  • Down and out, ups and downs, never downs and ups.

  • Okay, so they're fixed phrases, and I'll give you hope to give you some examples of how to use them and what they mean.

  • So let's start with the first one.

  • Down and out.

  • Well, when somebody is down and out, they're probably at rock bottom, meaning they are down literally financially, out of a job, out of their home, nowhere to go, and they are just maybe sleeping rough, sleeping on the streets.

  • So they are down and out.
