  • Hi there, this is Harry, and welcome back to my podcast where I try to help you to get a better understanding of the english language.

  • I do that by trying to improve your grammar, to help you to use phrasal verbs and idiomatic expressions and other english expressions in the right way.

  • So this can help you to build up more confidence when you want to have conversation either in business English or with your associates, your friends, your colleagues, whoever it might be.

  • And if you think there's anybody there that might enjoy our podcasts, well, invite them along and I'll give you my contact details at the end of this particular podcast.

  • Okay, so what we're going to talk about, well, in this particular podcast, we're going to talk about the word beyond, okay?

  • And beyond b e y o n d.

  • It can be used in a couple of ways.

  • It can be used as a preposition, so when it's followed by a noun, okay, the wall beyond my garden gate means there my garden gate, and then there's a wall after, or when you open the gate, there's a wall.

  • So it's beyond the wall beyond my garden gate.

  • Or it can also be used as an adverb when we without a following noun.

  • So we can talk about, or if we're talking about space exploration and they're now looking, of course, at Mars, so we can say, well, they landed on the moon, now they are investigating the possibility of landing on the planet Mars and beyond.

  • Okay?

  • So we can use it in that context.

  • So here's a few ways that I'm going to mention to you now, beyond repair, be beyond somebody, far beyond, beyond any doubt, above and beyond, beyond question, to go well beyond the back of beyond or beyond all understanding.

  • Okay?

  • So I'll try to give you an explanation of those and hopefully you'll be able to understand them a little better.

  • So first, beyond repair.

  • Well, when something is beyond repair, it means it's completely, as we might say in colloquial English, knackered or something that just won't work.

  • Knackered is one of those great words that British English and people in Ireland as well use when something is really broken.

  • They can also use it when they are very tired.
