  • Hi there.

  • This is Harry.

  • And welcome back to my podcast, where I try to help you to get a better understanding of the english language so that you can perhaps get a better interview, better job, be able to have a better conversation with your colleagues, your friends, relatives, people who are working in other international companies with whom you might be dealing.

  • All aspects of English are covered from grammar to phrasal verbs, expressions, and of course, pronunciation.

  • So if there's anybody out there that you think will benefit from our podcast, well, why don't you give them the details and ask them to join in.

  • At the end of this podcast, I'll give you my contact details for you and for others.

  • Okay, so what are we going to talk about today?

  • Well, we're going to look at some collocations, and we're going to look at collocations specifically with the word pay.

  • P a y, to pay, to pay a bill, to pay some money.

  • So we're going to look at collocations, and as always, I'm going to give you a list of the ones that I want to talk about, and then I give you some examples.

  • So here we go.

  • Pay the penalty, pay the price, pay a visit, pay tribute, to, pay your regards, to pay a compliment, pay compensation, pay attention to.

  • Okay, so let me give them to you again and I'll give you some examples.

  • So the first, to pay the penalty.

  • Well, when we say to pay the penalty, it could literally mean the penalty for parking in the wrong place.

  • And you'll have to pay the penalty, which is a small, substantial fine and perhaps some penalty points on your driving license, which could cause a problem in terms of your insurance.

  • Okay, so you pay the penalty for parking in the wrong place, or we just generally use it as a common general term and say, well, if you do something wrong, you have to pay the penalty.

  • Yeah.

  • Now, the penalty might be anything.

  • If you commit a serious crime, the penalty could be jail term or in prison.
