  • Hi there.

  • This is Harry, and welcome back to my lessons, where I try to get you to understand English in a slightly better way.

  • Help you with your business English, help you with your conversational English, perhaps for that job interview, whatever it might be, or indeed just some grammar point that you're having some difficulties with, like the words I'm going to give you now.

  • Okay.

  • As always, if you want to subscribe to the channel, we'd be delighted if you could do so, and also be delighted if you can join me on my podcast and listen in.

  • Okay?

  • And if you've got some friends, colleagues, relations, anybody you think might enjoy it, well, pass on the details to them as well.

  • So the particular grammar point that people have a problem with is understanding the difference between these words under, below, beneath, and underneath.

  • On the face of it, they are very, very similar, and they can be used in a similar way.

  • The most important thing to remember here, if you ever get a little bit stuck and you're not sure you can use under in all those situations, because it's quite universal.

  • Under the table?

  • Yeah.

  • Under my chair, under my hat, under cover, whatever it might be.

  • Under is something that you can use on a universal basis, whereas the others are a little bit different.

  • Okay.

  • But they're all prepositions.

  • Okay?

  • And so from that point of view, they're used quite frequently, but mostly under and below are the ones that are used most frequently.

  • Okay.

  • The word beneath is preposition, but it's much more formal than the others.
