  • Hi there.

  • This is Harry, and welcome back to my podcast, where I try to help you to get a better understanding of the english language, to use it in a much better way, to converse and have conversations with your colleagues, your friends, whatever you are looking for, we're here to help.

  • So what are we going to cover in today's podcast?

  • Well, in today's podcast, we're going to look specifically at colocations, and the colocations we're going to look at are connected with education.

  • So, education collocations.

  • At the end of this particular podcast, I'm going to give you my personal contact details.

  • So if you want to contact me about you or your friend or family, you need something, well, you'll have the details and just drop me a line.

  • Okay?

  • So as always, I'll go down through each particular collocation and then I'll go back and I'll give you some examples where appropriate.

  • I've got 13.

  • So get into university, do a degree in something, take notes, core subjects, continuous assessment, hand in an essay, revise for an exam, get good marks, take an exam, fail an exam, pass an exam, all been there, withdraw from the course, graduate from university.

  • Okay, so they're all collocations dealing with education.

  • Some of them will be quite familiar to you, but let's go through them all the same, just to give you an idea.

  • So number one, to get into university, well, this is always the trick.

  • How do you get into university?

  • Well, mostly you have to go in on a points based system.

  • So you have to sit final school exams in your final years or your high school years, and then you sit certain exams, you get points based on whatever the system happens to be, and therefore you get accepted or denied a place in university.

  • In my country, here in Ireland, where I'm living, the system is that these children sit a final cycle of two years, called their leaving certificate.

  • So they leave school 17 or 18 and they have a points system.

  • They can take the best six marks from their final exams, maximum of six.
